The motif represents the decoration of the sleeves of a woman's shirt from Sofia - Svilenitsa. The original of this Svilenitsa can be seen in the National Ethnographic Museum in Sofia. The Embroidery dates from the end of the XIX - beginning of the XX century.
Another variant of the elbetitsa - at the ends of each direction there is a schematized human head, which is very reminiscent of a Kuker mask. This variant of elbethica is known among the Shopite (people in Northern Bulgaria) as "rogettes". It symbolizes harmony in the world and in human behavior. The eight directions of the world merge into one common stable center. This emphasizes the invariance in the cycle of nature - winter - north, summer - south, spring - east, autumn - west.
