The model of this embroidery is featured in the
album "Bulgarian Folk Embroidery", by Rositsa Chukanova, edition of
"Bulgarian Artist", Sofia 1957, phototypical edition from the
original, Georgi V. Markov, Plovdiv 2017. The first mention of this motif may
be discovered in the book of Ivan Koev - "Bulgarian Embroidery
Ornaments", where is explained the transformation of the old solar
swastika sign into a plant ornament. The swastika is a symbol known from
ancient times, and in all cultures and eras it is associated with the symbolism
of the sun and fire. As an embroidery motif, the swastika has been placed on
the sleeves and waistbands of women's shirts in Sofia, Tran, Stankedimitrov,
Lovech, Karnobat, where it has a protective character - to protect these
exposed parts of the human figure from evil. The sign is also found in the life
of the old Bulgarians - on houses, carvings, ritual breads, Easter eggs,
tombstones. The Christian religion also perceives and interprets the swastika,
which is why we find it onto church utensils.
Since ancient times, the swastika kept meaning
of well-being, protection against evil, and the wish for goodness and success.
